When I taught my first student to read, a fourth grader who was struggling with reading, I had no formal training in reading instruction.

Like many people, I assumed learning to read was mostly about memorizing sight words, looking at pictures, and gradually picking it up through exposure to books.

To be honest, I thought English was a little crazy because that’s what I had always heard.

The language seemed full of exceptions and rules that didn’t make sense. I assumed learning to read was difficult for everyone and that somehow most children eventually figured it out.

When I started working with that student, I searched for “how to teach a child to read.”

What I found was surprisingly simple.

I started with three-letter words.

When those became easier, I moved to the next step. Then the next step after that.

As I followed a structured phonics sequence, I introduced new spelling patterns and added decodable sentences and stories along the way.

Something unexpected happened.

It worked.

The student began reading words that he had never seen before. He wasn’t memorizing them. He was figuring them out.

At first, I thought I had discovered the answer: phonics.

But as we continued working together, I realized something else was happening.

As he learned to decode words, he was also building vocabulary. We talked about the meanings of unfamiliar words and discussed what he was reading.

His comprehension improved because he could finally focus on understanding the text instead of struggling to figure out every word.

Over time, his reading became faster and more automatic. What I later learned was that he was developing reading fluency.

That’s when I realized reading wasn’t just one skill.

Phonics was important, but successful reading also involved vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and other skills working together.

Researchers have developed several models to explain how reading develops, including the Simple View of Reading and Scarborough’s Reading Rope. Both emphasize that skilled reading requires multiple language and word-recognition skills working together over time.

The more I learned, the more I discovered that researchers had already studied these connections for decades. What I was seeing firsthand in tutoring sessions aligned with a large body of research that is now commonly known as the Science of Reading.

The surprising part is that the Science of Reading is not new. While the term has become popular in recent years, the research behind it has been developing for more than 50 years. Researchers across education, psychology, neuroscience, and linguistics have spent decades studying how children learn to read and what instructional practices are most effective.

Once I learned how reading develops and how the brain processes written language, so many things started to make sense. Reading success wasn’t simply about intelligence, effort, or luck. There were specific skills that children needed to develop, and those skills could be taught systematically.

What Is the Science of Reading?

The Science of Reading is a large body of research that examines how children learn to read and which instructional methods are most effective.

It is not a curriculum, a reading program, or a teaching method.

Instead, it is a collection of research findings gathered from multiple fields, including:

Researchers have spent decades studying how the brain learns to process written language and what skills children need to become successful readers.

What Is the Simple View of Reading?

One of the most influential models in reading research is the Simple View of Reading.

The Simple View of Reading explains that reading comprehension depends on two abilities working together:

Reading Comprehension = Decoding × Language Comprehension

Decoding is the ability to read words accurately. Language comprehension is the ability to understand spoken language, vocabulary, and sentence meaning.

A child who can sound out every word but does not understand what those words mean will struggle to comprehend what they read. Likewise, a child with strong language skills cannot become an independent reader if they cannot decode words.

Both skills matter. Both skills can be taught.

The Simple View of Reading helps explain why effective reading instruction must support both word-reading skills and language comprehension.

What Is Scarborough’s Reading Rope?

Scarborough’s Reading Rope is another influential model that illustrates how skilled reading develops. It describes two strands that must work together — word recognition (phonological awareness, decoding, sight word recognition) and language comprehension (background knowledge, vocabulary, language structures, verbal reasoning). Like the Simple View of Reading, it shows that phonics alone is not sufficient for skilled reading. Both strands must be developed and eventually woven together for fluent, independent reading.

They’re not.

Phonics is one important component of the Science of Reading.

However, strong readers also need vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, language skills, and background knowledge.

The Science of Reading supports all of these areas, not just phonics.

What Is Orthographic Mapping and Why Does It Matter?

One concept parents often encounter when learning about the Science of Reading is orthographic mapping.

Orthographic mapping is the process the brain uses to permanently store written words for instant recognition. It is how children move from slowly sounding out words to recognizing them automatically.

Contrary to popular belief, skilled readers do not memorize words simply by repeatedly looking at them.

Instead, they connect the sounds in a word to the letters that represent those sounds. Through repeated accurate decoding, those words become stored in long-term memory.
