Stop sounds, also known as plosives or stop consonants, are speech sounds produced by completely blocking airflow in the vocal tract and then releasing it suddenly. These sounds are essential components of speech and are critical for proper pronunciation. Stop sounds are characterized by a brief pause or “stop” in the airflow, followed by a burst of air when the blockage is released.

Key Characteristics of Stop Sounds

  • Airflow Blockage: The airflow is completely blocked at some point in the vocal tract, usually by the lips, teeth, or tongue.
  • Sudden Release: The blockage is released quickly, producing a burst of sound. This is what distinguishes stop sounds from other consonants.
  • Voiced vs. Voiceless: Stop sounds can be voiced (with vocal cord vibration, like /b/, /d/, and /g/) or voiceless (without vocal cord vibration, like /p/, /t/, and /k/).

How Stop Sounds Differ from Fricatives

Stop sounds differ from fricatives in that fricatives are produced by forcing air through a narrow constriction, which creates a hissing or friction-like sound. Unlike stop sounds, fricatives (such as /f/, /s/, /sh/) do not involve complete blockage of airflow, but rather a continuous release of air through a narrow opening.
